Sustainable Development Indicators for Continuous Improvement in Swine Production

FFPQ

Aware of the social and environmental challenges linked to swine production, the Fédération des producteurs de porcs du Québec (FFPQ) wanted to progressively incorporate the concept of sustainable development into their members’ daily activities. The FPPQ relied on Transfert Environnement’s expertise to train participants on the concept of sustainable development and lead workshops aimed at developing sustainability indicators for the Quebec swine industry through local consultations. Selected indicators were presented by the FPPQ two years later, in the fall of 2010.

Sustainable Development Policy and Sound Waste Management for the CHUQ

Eager to engage in the « green trend » the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec (CHUQ) asked Transfert Environnement for assistance and guidance in implementing an environmental process. During the mandate, Transfert Environnement created and organized a sustainable development committee and assessed the waste management situation. Transfert Environnement also prepared a “Green Guide” which defines the CHUQ’s sustainable development orientations based on the university hospital’s approach.  Following the success of these first achievements, Transfert Environnement also agreed to produce their waste management plan (PGMR) and establish an operational unit charged with its implementation. All of these projects were formalized by the CHUQ’s Board of Directors on May 5, 2008 when the “Green Guide” was officially presented. Follow-up on the St. Lawrence Plan: Developing an Integrated River Management Approach

Phase IV of the Canada-Québec Agreement on the St. Lawrence (the St. Lawrence Plan or SLP) was coming to an end in 2010, which called for an evaluation of the program. The strengths and weaknesses of the program needed to be assessed in order to target forthcoming actions and improve the development, governance and future activities of the program while ensuring its continuation.  In this perspective, the SLP Coordination Office mandated Transfert Environnement to evaluate the management structure and accomplishments of Phase IV of the Agreement and draw recommendations through an analysis of the SLP committee reports. Transfert Environnement also organized a consultation meeting with representatives of the various SLP units in order to incorporate their input into the recommendations for a future phase and validate the primary findings. Results of the evaluation were applied to develop the next Canada-Québec Agreement on the St. Lawrence in the Spring of 2010.
